Je garde le regard froid, devant mes soldats, mais mon cœur bat plus vite que jamais. I think I’ve seen this film before. Mais j’ai tort, tellement tort car je ne suis pas prête pour cet ending là.

Un sourire triste. Ce serait drôle si ce n'était pas insoutenable : Viktoria n'a jamais besoin de grand chose pour tout comprendre. “Something happens when everybody finds out...” Il y a protocole pour ça, il y a toujours un protocole. And that’s the thing with illicit affairs. Mon ton est uniquement factuel, sans une once d'accusation. Avec une autre je pourrai m’inquiéter qu’elle le prenne mal, mais je sais que Scylla et moi parlons ce langage secret que seules nous deux connaissons. Celui des ailes enchaînées par des responsabilités qu’elles ont trop froidement, trop tôt choisies. I’ll get ready to come with you to your mother. Nos mères, aurai-je pu dire, auront sans doute beaucoup de commentaires désagréables, mais je ne peux pas lui faire porter ce poids aujourd’hui. Scylla secoue la tête, d'une détermination empreinte de tristesse “I can go anywhere I want. Anywhere I want, just not home” Elle ne retournerait pas auprès de sa mère, pas à Nydaros. Une tempête se prépare à la faire tomber, et cette fois, elle n'entraînera pas Viktoria dans sa chute. “They are the hunters, we are the foxes. You can't be seen with me.” Pour tous les chemins que sa générale a parcouru avec elle, Scylla se doit de lui promettre une sortie de secours, même si ça veut dire partir sans elle.

Mon sang se glace comme si Varuna elle même s’était mêlée à mes artères. C’est impossible, je le refuse, je ne peux pas vivre ça. Don’t you think it would be best if we both stayed ? Je garde un ton neutre tant que mes soldats sont à portée d’oreilles mais je m’éloigne vite d’eux. Mon dilemme : je ne sais pas à quel point je veux que la princesse entende ma détresse. Come here ; you can meet me in the back. C’est le dernier espoir auquel je me raccroche : ensemble on peut tout battre, non ? Viktoria et Scylla, l’une protégeant l’autre, c’est bien la team la plus puissante des Océans ? Qu’est-ce que je suis sensée faire sans elle ?

Bien sûr, Scylla n'aurait jamais attendu de sa générale qu'elle rende les armes sans se battre. “I can't” elle souffle, les doigts douloureusement grippés au téléphone. Pour cette fois, juste pour cette fois, c'est à elle de protéger Viktoria. “Say you didn't know. Say I'm not your homeland anymore.” Je saurais que c'est faux. L'exil ne détruit pas l'amour. “You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now. Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound”

I don’t want to. The four little words I want to scream as loud as I can but also the ones that would betray all our friendship. I force them inside my throat like a rotten treasure chest that would only bring a curse to the land that is my body. All the betrayals I inflicted to myself, all the times I burn my conscience was to keep my best friend from sinking in the awful ocean of her life. I can’t even ask myself what will be my life without the anchor of that goal. I can’t think about that I must only focus on one think, always the same : how to protect Scylla.

It’s never too late to come back to my side.

A promise, the worst critic I can utter. An eternal oath, that never ever ever would we break up together, the certitude that on all my blank spaces there will only be one name, that she’ll never be on her own.

You know you’re the kind of book I can’t put down.

Other words like goodbye are impossible. I will never say that to you Scylla, never. Through all the hazes, the thieves, the lakes and the bad reputations : I’ll come back to you.

Scylla smiles, laughs softly to cover the sound of her own heart breaking. This is not the end, she thinks. This is just for now, just so my mistakes don’t drown you out. This is me paying you back, this is me caring. This is my trying. It baffles her that she was ever good at this – with all of the speeches, all the convincing and the persuading and all the words that came to her naturally when it was her job and she didn’t mean any of it, when none of it mattered. Now she was saying goodbye, and no words appear before her in the aftermath, suddenly nothing feels good enough because nothing compares to the pain of losing her, even just for a while. “Vik, before I go, I need you to know one thing, and know it in your bones” she says, slightly choking on the words as they roll off her tongue. “You are the best thing that’s ever been mine” And later on, when the line goes silent and she’s alone again, she clasps her hands together and prays to Ahurani. It only hurts this much right now, whatever happens, you’re never losing me.
